Beyond Celiac is seeking applications for its 2019-2022 established investigator award. Emphasis will be placed on but not limited to immunology. Approaches leading to the identification of potential therapeutics are encouraged. Up to $100,000 per year (plus 8% indirect costs) for a maximum of three years may be requested for established clinical, translational or basic science investigators. The award is intended to support new and novel approaches to understanding celiac disease, and is not for funding of ongoing projects.

Applicant Criteria

Applicants must be existing independent investigators (M.D., M.D./Ph.D, or established Ph.D.’s), not trainees. This grant is not for support of post-doctoral work. The proposed research should be an extension of or departure from current research that is not covered by an existing grant. This granting program will fund applications from researchers on issues deemed a high priority by the Beyond Celiac Scientific Advisory Council (SAC). For the 2019 granting cycle, all meritorious topics will be considered. However, an SAC-identified priority are applications directed towards T-cell epitope discovery to drive and inform immune tolerance strategies for treating celiac disease.

Required Submission Materials

Applicants must submit a complete application in a single file (PDF).

• Adherence to standard NIH guidelines for proposal preparation, including biosketch format, is recommended.

• Proposals should not exceed five (5) pages (excluding references).

• A budget must be provided. Funding requests may include:

  • Personnel (e.g., research assistant and/or faculty salary support; this should include a percentage of effort for the proposed study with appropriate justification)

  • Supplies and reagents

• Letters of support from Department Chairs and institutional animal/human research regulatory boards will be required prior to funding.

Duration of funding and Requirements of Awardees

Unexpended funds must be returned to Beyond Celiac at the end of the research period. Awardees will submit formal written reports annually. Portions of the final payment will be withheld until receipt of the final progress report. Grant recipients will be required to present data at a Beyond Celiac Symposium or equivalent meeting as determined by Beyond Celiac. All publications arising from this award must include the following statement “This research was supported by the Beyond Celiac Established Investigator Award.”

Selection Criteria

The primary criteria for the Award include the scientific merit of the proposal and the investigator’s qualifications. Additional criteria include the environment of the host institution and the availability of resources judged essential for the success of the proposed research.
