Letter from Alice: Not a Fad Diet

Around this time each year, our web searches for terms like “gluten-free diet” surge, along with questions like “Is rice gluten-free?” and “Is alcohol gluten-free?” This search trend reflects people’s interest in healthier eating habits in the new year, while mistakenly viewing the gluten-free diet as a weight-loss solution.

Let’s set the record straight:

  • The gluten-free diet is not a weight-loss diet.
  • There is little evidence to suggest that going gluten-free has any health benefits for those who don’t have celiac disease, NCGS or other autoimmune diseases. In fact, the research indicates that it may have adverse effects on otherwise healthy people.
  • The gluten-free diet is a medical diet. It is prescribed by doctors to individuals with celiac disease, non-celiac gluten-sensitivity (NCGS), and occasionally other conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disorder.
  • For those with celiac disease and NCGS, the gluten-free diet is our only way to avoid health complications and is not intended for weight loss.
  • If someone wishes to try the gluten-free diet to see if it makes them feel better, they should get tested for celiac disease first; accurate test results require the person to be consuming gluten at the time of testing.

While misinformation can be frustrating for those in the celiac community, it’s important to remember the confusion you felt when you were first diagnosed. You probably double and triple-checked ingredient labels and sought support to navigate this new way of eating. If you know someone exploring the gluten-free diet—whether they have celiac disease or are simply looking to lose weight—view it as an opportunity to educate and connect.

Here are some resources you can share with them (or maybe use yourself!):

Beyond Celiac is continually working to raise awareness of celiac disease and develop a treatment beyond the gluten-free diet. This work is significantly more impactful with the help of patients like you from around the world—yes, you! The world can seem divisive, but we are stronger together. Let’s use the emphasis on diet in the new year as an opportunity to promote awareness of celiac disease.

Wishing you good health in 2025,
—Alice Bast

Being diagnosed with celiac disease when you’re older increases your risk of being frail

Although celiac disease is being diagnosed more often in older people, little research has been focused on the specific complications faced by older adults. An international group of researchers recently set out to determine whether those diagnosed with celiac disease at 60 years or more had a greater risk of being frail than their peers.

Voices of Celiac: DeDe’s Story

“[When I was diagnosed,] we didn’t know what it was or what it meant. All I knew was that I was sad and thought, ‘I can never travel again.’ It was overwhelming. Thank goodness my husband was an excellent cook and we started to discover things that were healthy and gluten-free.

Eventually, by what may be like 2009, gluten-free became more ‘mainstream’ and I could dine out and grocery shop with success.

It’s not easy. But I’m pretty good at it and now feel like I can travel anywhere.”
